The History
of El Paradiso

El Paradiso, in Altea la Vella, has its roots in the agricultural traditions of the Mediterranean. For centuries, farmers cultivated the hillsides here, carving terraces into the slopes to grow olives, almonds, citrus, and grapes. The old stone walls and trails that surround the urbanization are living reminders of this past, when life was simple and closely tied to the land.

In the second half of the 20th century, as Altea became known as a destination for travelers, artists, and visitors from across Europe, El Paradiso was developed as a residential community. Unlike many coastal areas, the urbanization grew in harmony with its natural surroundings, combining spacious villas and family homes with open views of the sea and mountains.

Over time, El Paradiso has evolved into a neighborhood where history and modern life meet. The crickets of summer nights, the chimney smoke of winter evenings, and the paths of the old farmers still give the urbanization its authentic character. Today, it is home to both permanent residents and seasonal visitors — people drawn not only by its beauty and views, but also by the sense of continuity with the land’s past.

The Pearl of the Mediterranean

About Altea

Altea is often called the “Pearl of the Mediterranean,” a town of whitewashed houses, winding cobbled streets, and the iconic blue-domed church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. Once a humble fishing and farming village, Altea’s roots stretch back to the Iberians, Greeks, Romans, and Moors, each leaving their mark on its culture and landscape. The fortified old town, built in the thirteenth century, still charms visitors today with its lantern-lit lanes and sweeping sea views.

Over time, Altea became a magnet for artists, writers, and musicians, especially during the bohemian wave of the 1960s, which gave it its reputation as a cultural haven. Its lively seaside promenade contrasts beautifully with the peaceful charm of Altea la Vella—meaning “Old Altea.” Nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Bernia, Altea la Vella has kept its slower rhythm, surrounded by olive groves, carob trees, and mountain trails that recall its farming roots.

Together, Altea and Altea la Vella reflect two sides of the same soul: vibrant and artistic on the coast, timeless and serene inland. It’s a place where tradition and creativity live side by side, making this corner of the Mediterranean one of Spain’s true treasures.
